Flat Dark Brown Worm

by Tilley
(Halifax)

I saw what I thought was a piece of a leaf on the side of my fingernail a few days ago. It was laying in the groove of my nail bed and the cuticle when it started disappearing into my finger underneath my nail bed on the side of my finger.

It was a flat dark brown worm, about 2-3 mm wide and about 1cm long. It completely disappeared into my finger.

I went to the doctor and he said that I should just cover the hole I made while trying to dig it out with nail polish and the parasite will suffocate and die.

This seems like a silly and simplistic solution. Do you have any idea what this is?

Hi Tilley,

It sounds like your flat dark brown worm could be a hookworm or flat worm. If that's the case, there is no point in trying to dig it out or smother it with nail polish.

Hookworms travel through the skin to the blood stream and eventually to the lungs and then the intestines. They love to live and breed in the intestinal tract.

Of course, I can't guarantee that's what you are dealing with, but if it is any of the common parasitic worms, the best option is an intestinal cleanse. You could use Para 90 or Herbal Fiberblend or both, depending on your preferences.

I'd also take some probiotics (friendly bacteria) to help keep your immune system strong so that it can deal with whatever parasite has tunneled into your finger. Something like Florafood is a good choice.

Hope that helps. To your good health!
Angie
