We don't usually think about the rich and famous suffering from constipation. The fact is that people from all walks of life get constipated from time to time. Many people even suffer from chronic constipation.

When your bowels aren't functioning properly, you tend to feel miserable all over! It's no wonder, either. What goes in, must come out. When it doesn't, that food waste sits in your colon and rots causing you grief in many forms.

Common Symptoms of Constipation

If you are not emptying your bowels regularly (at least daily), your body is storing the toxic waste. Sooner or later, your health will be affected. These are some of the ways the body reacts to poor elimination.

  • fatigue
  • gas
  • bloating
  • abdominal discomfort
  • allergies
  • anxiety
  • predisposition to skin conditions
  • depression
  • headaches
  • female disorders
  • insomnia
  • less mental energy
  • slow healing

Obviously, some of these problems are not exclusively signs of constipation. The important point to note is that constipation CAN cause these symptoms.

Learn to read your body and identify what is going on in your system. For instance, you may not associate headaches with constipation. Remember that your whole body is connected. When one area is suffering, the whole body can be affected.

What Is Normal? What is Regular?

You may be wondering if your transit time is "normal." The transit time is the time it takes for your food to go from your mouth, through your digestive tract, and out the other end.

What is regular and normal for one person, may not be the same for another. Transit time should be about 24-30 hours.

Just because you eliminate at least once a day doesn't mean that your transit time is 24 hours. You may still be passing food that you ate a couple of days ago if you have sluggish intestines. A sluggish bowel will also cause symptoms of constipation.

You can (and probably should) check your transit time by eating at least 4 tbsp. of whole kernel corn. Be sure watch your stool for the first sign of the corn. If you see corn within 24 hours, your transit time is optimal.

If the corn doesn't appear for 30-40 hours or more you have a prolonged transit time. If you don't see the corn for 78 hours or never, you most likely have a toxic bowel.

How often should you go to be "regular?"

Some medical books say that "regular" can range from 2-3 times a day to several times a week.

Hippocrates counseled the Athenians...
"it was essential that they should pass large bulky
motions after every meal."

Ideally, you should have a bowel movement every time you eat. At the least, you should go at least once a day. If you aren't eliminating your waste products adequately, you are at risk of developing various diseases.

What Should Your Bowel Motions Look Like?

Constipation isn't just a lack of frequency in your bowel movements. You need to take a look at feces in order to evaluate your digestive health.

If your stool is small, dry, and hard, these are signs of constipation, even if you are going daily.

As unpleasant as it may seem, look at your pooh when you go. A healthy pooh should be...

  • medium to dark brown
  • full, round, and rather long
  • easy to pass
  • not too smelly
  • not float or be greasy or oily with bubbles
  • not be accompanied by blood caused by irritation or tearing of rectal tissues

If you experience frequent symptoms of constipation, this is your body's signal that something is wrong and you need to fix it! You may need to change your diet, increase your exercise, drink more water, or take more nutrients.

There are natural cures for constipation that can help you get back on track. When your bowels are functioning properly, you'll feel better all over.

To your good health!
